In its fourth week, “Haikyu!! the Movie: Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump,” the first installment in the two-part Haikyu!! Final sequel film project, ascended from the second position to claim the top spot at the Japanese box office. Over the weekend, it garnered sales from 574,000 tickets, accumulating a revenue of 843,148,150 yen (approximately US$5.73 million). The cumulative total reached 4.38 million tickets sold, accumulating 6,280,898,280 yen (about US$42.73 million) since its premiere on February 16. The film is also being screened in IMAX format. Directed and scripted by Susumu Mitsunaka, known for his work on the first and third Haikyu!! television anime series, the movie continues to captivate audiences.
During its initial three days of screening, the film achieved remarkable success, selling 1,529,000 tickets and earning 2,230,465,540 yen (around US$14.83 million). This remarkable performance secured its position as the highest-grossing opening weekend for a film in Japan this year, surpassing the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM anime film’s opening weekend earnings of 1,065,983,130 yen.
The announcement of the two films came from the anime’s staff in August 2022. The first film focuses on the anticipated showdown between Karasuno High and Nekoma High, drawing fans into the thrilling world of Haikyu!!
